Formaldehyde, also known as Methanal (CH₂O), is the simplest aldehyde and one of the most important industrial chemicals. It is a colorless, pungent-smelling gas that is usually sold as a 37–50% aqueous solution, commonly referred to as formalin.
It is widely used as a chemical intermediate, preservative, and disinfectant. Due to its strong reactivity, Formaldehyde is a crucial raw material for resins, plastics, coatings, textiles, and disinfectants.
